• Wondering what to do/ what would you do? February is the month when we managers get the great pleasure of completing appraisals for supervisory staff. I have 7 that report to me and I like to really take my time, be thoughtful and give good feedback. It's not uncommon for me to spend several days off and on just on one of their appraisals. Januaru 4th, knowing a couple of them had vacations planned for next week and later in the month, I sent an asking them to please complete their self appraisals (it's part of the process) by. This gave them a complete month (just over) to be done, and gave me roughly 3 weeks to complete all 7 (including other objective based stuff I had to wait for this week, etc). All must be turned in by. I have several who are procrastinators and I know this so I give reminders weekly. One of them seems to just think he is not accountable. He is going on a trip, leaving tonight, and not return to Oregon until the 12th. He was hired last year so this is his first. I've asked if he needed help on the appraisal.. "no, I've got it." Are you sure? there are some documents I can send you that help. "I think I can do it. Maybe if you show me the link again" Ok done. Today, he comes in my office to ask if he can leave early. Now I'm a easy-going manager and I'm fair about allowing people to leave early on a Friday especially knowing someone is flying out so I ask him.. got the appraisal done? "Um.. was that due now?" I was instantly pissed off and seeing red. There are some other variables here, like the fact that we are going to be short with him going on vacation and I have another supervisor out on an unexpected leave, so I am doing some covering, as well as just being handed a project that is going to take a lot of my time this month. Normally, I keep my cool, but I just said, I would appreciate it if you would get that in before you leave. He's like "huh?" So anyway..about 4:30, he's gone find out he left at 3:30, never said a word to me. Appraisal isn't done. Off time is usually 4:30. Would you be thoughtful and give good feedback at this point? Would you go out of your way to find the positives in his performance (as I would usually do to balance the negatives) or would you just say the hell with it and give him the same consideration he gave you?
